Regarding Visa Cascade: Back And Forth Europe Without New Visa Applications

YOGYAKARTA - Starting at the end of July, Indonesian citizens (WNI) will have easier access to travel to countries in the European Union region thanks to the enactment of a cascade visa policy. This policy allows the submission of a Schengen multiple entry visa or double visit.

With this visa, Indonesian passport holders can enter and exit EU territory many times without having to apply for new visas every time they travel, during the validity period the visa is still active. This is good news for travelers, business people, researchers, and anyone who has the need to often go back and forth to the Blue Continent.

This revolutionary policy was delivered directly by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in a meeting with the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, at the headquarters of the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium, on Sunday, July 13, 2025. This step is considered as part of an effort to strengthen bilateral relations between Indonesia and the European Union.

Visa cascade is a system designed to simplify the process of submitting Schengen visas for non-EU citizens who already have a positive track record of travel to Europe. In this context, Indonesian citizens who have traveled to the Schengen area and complyed with previous visa rules now have the opportunity to obtain multiple entry visas with a longer validity period.

This means that after the first or second visit to Europe, Indonesian citizens who meet certain requirements can obtain visas that allow them to visit several Schengen countries many times with just one same visa.

In his statement, Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that this policy aims to strengthen connections between residents of the two regions. He said that Indonesians can now more freely access Europe for various purposes, such as tourism, education, research, investment, as well as business and professional cooperation.

Visa cascade is considered a form of recognition for the increasing mobility of Indonesian citizens who are considered credible and organized when traveling abroad.

To obtain a multiple-entry Schegen type visa through this cascade policy, there are several important criteria that you must fulfill. These requirements are made to ensure that the applicant is an individual responsible and has a clear need to travel frequently to the Schengen region.

Multiple entry visas are generally given to individuals who have a routine need to travel to the Schengen area. This includes various professional needs such as:
