National Police Chief Sigit: Not Only Investigating Rice Mixing But Takaran Reduction
JAKARTA - Indonesian Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo revealed that the investigation into alleged violations of a number of rice producers was not only targeting the practice of mixing, but also reducing the dose.
"The temporary category of voting, then there are also those who weigh it under the provisions, not according to what is stated on the packaging list," Sigit told reporters in Jakarta, Thursday, July 17.
The findings are the result of an initial examination by the National Police's Food Task Force, which is currently digging up information from 25 rice producers and distributors. They were examined regarding allegations of manipulation of the quality and quantity of rice in the market.
"Our plan is to conduct an examination of 25 distributors or producers," said the National Police Chief.
Not only cooperating with the police, the investigation also involves the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan), especially in laboratory testing to ensure the difference between premium rice and medium which is often mixed and sold at higher prices.
"We are working with the Ministry of Agriculture to check the lab. The process is still ongoing," said Sigit.
Previously, Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman revealed that the results of the investigation with the Food Task Force found 212 rice brands suspected of being mixed medium rice with premiums, then sold at prices above the provisions.
"We will not tolerate fraudulent practices like this. Don't treat the people by mixing rice and selling it at premium prices. This is not only an economic problem, but also moral," said Amran.
Amran also emphasized that there is no logical reason for rice prices to soar above the highest retail price (HET), because national production is high.
Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), national rice production for the January 'August 2025 period reached 24.97 million tons, an increase of 14.09 percent compared to the same period last year which was only 21.88 million tons.
"High production, abundant stock. There is no reason for anyone to raise prices arbitrarily. Don't trick the market with quality and price manipulation. This concerns the basic needs of the people," said Minister Amran.
