SAIC and Alibaba Prepare IM LS9 to Challenge Denza N9 and Li L9

JAKARTA - The luxury SUV market in China is set to heat up with the arrival of a new entrant, the result of a collaboration between Chinese giants SAIC and Alibaba, under the banner of IM Motors. The SUV is the IM LS9, a full-size EREV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle), and is scheduled to officially launch in the fourth quarter of this year.

The IM LS9 is predicted to be a direct competitor to key players in this segment, namely the Li L9 and Denza N9. Its appearance has been public knowledge since last June, when a prototype unit was caught on camera in China. Now, as CarNewsChina reported on Thursday, July 17, IM Motors has released official images that further highlight the design and advanced features of its latest model.

The IM LS9 sports a modern and elegant style, featuring a closed front fascia combined with prominent rib accents on the hood. The unique "T"-shaped lighting design and elongated light bars at the front and rear create a futuristic feel. Luxurious chrome details are scattered throughout the exterior, including the front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and lower window frames, adding a premium touch to the vehicle.

As a 6-passenger SUV with a 2+2+2 configuration, the IM LS9 boasts impressive dimensions: 5279 mm long, 2000 mm wide, and 1806 mm high, with a wheelbase of 3160 mm. Its kerb weight reaches 2,695 kg. Customers can choose from tire specifications ranging from 255/50 R20, 265/45 R21, to HL265/40 R22. Modern features such as hidden door handles, a sunroof, and a roof-mounted lidar system underscore IM Motors' commitment to innovation.

Powerful Performance with Third-Generation X-by-Wire Technology

Beneath its luxurious design, the IM LS9 boasts a combination of efficient and powerful powertrains. The car will be powered by a 1.5T engine (model 15FNE) as a range extender with a maximum power output of 114 kW (153 hp). This engine is combined with dual electric motors at the front and rear, producing a maximum power of 160 kW (215 hp) (front) and 230 kW (308 hp) (rear), respectively. This combination allows the IM LS9 to reach a top speed of 220 km/h.

Furthermore, the IM LS9 is rumored to feature CATL's Freevoy battery, capable of providing a pure electric range of up to 450 km. Another interesting innovation is the adoption of IM Motors' third-generation X-by-Wire technology, which allows for front and rear steering control as well as four-wheel power vectoring. A semi-circular steering wheel option is also available for customers seeking a more unique driving experience.
