Eight East Acehnese Fishermen Rescued By Foreign Cargo Ships In The Malacca Strait

The joint SAR team evacuated eight fishermen from East Aceh Regency who were rescued by foreign cargo ships after their ship sank in the waters of the Malacca Strait.

East Aceh SAR chairman Herman, said the fishing boat was named KM Peuga Laot from Idi Cut. This ship is manned by 10 people.

"Of the 10 crew members, eight were rescued by foreign cargo ships sailing in the Malacca Strait. Meanwhile, two others were missing. The joint SAR team evacuated the eight fishermen who survived from the foreign ship," Herman said as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, July 17.

Herman said KM Peuga Laot sank in the waters of the Malacca Strait about 72.2 miles off the coast of Lhokseumawe City, Aceh Province, Tuesday (16/7). The exact cause of the fishing boat sinking is not yet known.

The eight fishermen survived, namely M Riski, M Yudi, Zakir, Hardian, Firda, Wahyu, Fahmi, and another one who has not been recorded. Meanwhile, the missing crew members were Abdurrahman and Saiful.

Herman said the eight crew members of the KM Peuga Laot were rescued by the cargo ship of the Hong Kong-flagged Maersk Chilka, which was then sailing to Singapore.

The joint SAR team evacuated the eight fishermen from the cargo ship of Maersk Chilka. The Hong Kong-flagged ship is a few miles from Nusantara Fisheries Port Idi, East Aceh Regency.

"The joint SAR team consists of the Langsa City Pos Basarnas, East Aceh SAR personnel, and personnel from Polairud, East Aceh. The team picked up eight fishermen who were rescued by the cargo ship," said Herman.
