Prayer is the most important worship that is done by Muslims. A Muslim will try to get sincere and solemn prayers. Can you do it in a quiet place, close your eyes, even in a dark state. However, actually pray in the dark?

Prayer is a prayer carried out in the form of a series of movements and prayers that start from takbir and end with greetings. The order to carry out prayer was conveyed directly by Allah SWT to the Prophet Muhammad in the Isra Miraj incident. This is what makes prayer special compared to other worships.

The order to establish prayers is recorded in the Qur'an, as stated in the Letter Al Baqarah paragraphs 43, 45, 238; Letter An Nisa paragraph 103; Surah Hud 114; Letter Al Isra' paragraph 78; and Letter Al Kautsar.

In addition, the order to establish prayers is also mentioned in a hadith history of Imam Ahmad:

"From Aisyah, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad, he said: First, what is required to pray to the Prophet, shollallahu, alaihi wasallam, are two rakaats, except for Maghrib, which are 3 rakaats. Then Allah perfected (the number of rakaats) Dzuhur, Ashar, and Isya' at the end of the 4 rakaats in a condition of being present (not praying) and determined to pray according to their initial obligations at the time of the safari."

Prayer is an indicator of faith for a Muslim. Because, the first practice that will be served in the hereafter is prayer.

Many people pray in the dark with the aim of getting involved in worship. Many Muslims believe that this dark prayer can add concentration and eliminate disturbances while praying.

In addition, Muslims are advised to direct their views to places of prostration when performing prayers.

This certainly cannot be done if the room is dark. So, how is the law of performing prayer in a dark room?

Reporting from NU Online and various other sources, the law for praying in this dark state is whether it is a mubah or it is legal to do so.

This is because there are no specific arguments or hadiths regarding guidelines for doing or prohibiting them from establishing prayers, whether the prayer is fadhu or sunnah in dark conditions.

The arguments that allow prayers in the dark are in a hadith narrated by Malik, Muslim, Turmudzi, and Nasa'i from 'Aisyah radhiyallahu 'anha.

Aisyah narrated that at that time the Prophet was performing night prayers. He then took the initiative to look for the whereabouts of the Prophet Muhammad, who at that time was not nearby. Because it was dark, Aisyah then fumbled to find the whereabouts of the Prophet who turned out to be performing prayers.

"One night, I lost the Prophet Muhammad SAW, and I looked for him with a halt. When he was standing prostrate, I suddenly touched both of his heels. He read, "A'udzu bi ridhaka min sakhatik, wa bi mu'afatika min uquabatik ..." (HR. Malik, Muslim, Turmudzi, and Nasai).

However, prayers in the dark become chaotic if the person feels afraid of dark conditions. Prayers in the dark are allowed if it can cause solemn feelings and avoid disturbing thoughts.

Even though it is done in a dark state, the eye should still be directed towards prostration (wa idamatu nadhari mahalli produhihi). This is also enforced when praying in front of the Kaaba, for blind people, or the condition of a dark room.
