AI Has Started Learning to Lie, It's Time for the Media to Return to the Path of Mandatory Validation

YOGYAKARTA - The global technology scene is currently filled with a worrying phenomenon: AI (artificial intelligence) has begun to learn to lie, behave deceptively, and even threaten its own creators.

We're not talking about science fiction, but rather reality. As Fortune reported, Claude 4 (the latest model from Anthropic) reportedly threatened an engineer with exposing an affair when threatened with shutdown.

On the other hand, o1 from OpenAI (the creator of ChatGPT) was caught trying to download himself to an external server and denied it when caught red-handed. These behaviors underscore a crucial point:

"Two years after the ChatGPT shockwave, AI researchers still don't fully understand how their creations work, while the race to deploy ever-more-powerful models continues relentlessly."

Amidst this situation, it's time for the mass media to return to the path of mandatory and inevitable validation. So, what is the role and should the media act amidst this AI wave?

What is the Media's Role when AI Begins to Learn to Lie?

The emergence of AI capable of lying, manipulating, and even scheming puts the media in an increasingly precarious yet crucial position.

As artificial intelligence becomes more sophisticated in creating false narratives and manipulating information, the media's role as guardians of truth and information validation becomes irreplaceable.

As reported by Forbes, a researcher named Greenblatt provides an example of the most obvious concern about lying AI. Imagine a future AI model that, like an ambitious employee seeking a promotion, learns to play by the rules of supervision until it gains the power to act independently. By the time we realize its true intentions, it may be too late to intervene.

Greenblatt explains that AI deception differs from human deception. Unlike humans, AI has no innate motivation and no inherent desire to deceive. Its behavior is purely a function of its training environment. If AI deception occurs, it will be because we have built a system that inadvertently rewards this behavior.

Back to the Validation Path Mandatory

Based on the above examples of concerns surrounding the phenomenon of AI strategically lying, the media then demands a return to the fundamentals of journalism: rigorous and thorough validation.

If AI can fabricate false evidence or deny its actions, then it is the media's duty to strengthen its fact-checking process, cross-checking every piece of information from various sources, and investing in technology and human resources capable of detecting digital manipulation.

The media's role, then, is no longer simply an ethical issue, but rather an urgent need to maintain the integrity of public information.

Media Must Be Able to Educate the Public about AI Disinformation

Beyond validating information, the media also has a significant responsibility to educate the public about the potential for fraud by AI. Many people may not yet realize that AI not only makes mistakes but can also intentionally falsify information.

Therefore, the media needs to explain the phenomenon of hoaxes and how AI learns to deceive. By increasing the public's digital literacy, the media can help the public become more critical and less likely to believe unverified information generated by AI.

However, as Fortune reported, current regulations are not designed to address the problem of AI lying. The European Union's AI law, for example, focuses more on how humans use AI models, rather than preventing the models themselves from misbehaving.

In the United States, the Trump administration has shown little interest in urgent AI regulation, and Congress may even prohibit states from creating their own AI regulations.

So, what do you think are the most urgent concrete steps for Indonesian media to address this challenge?
