Manny Pacquiao Risks His Reputation Against Mario Barrios

JAKARTA Manny Pacquiao risked his reputation when he decided to return to professional matches against Mario Barrios this weekend in Las Vegas, United States.

The two names are scheduled to enter the ring on Saturday, July 19, 2025, local time, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada. They will fight for the WBC welterweight world title.

Pacquiao returned to the professional ring at the age of 46 or for the first time since August 2021 and fought 16 years younger Barrios.

Many doubt this decision because of the age difference between the two names. They assess Pacquiao's ability has faded compared to his heyday as world champion.

"I am worried about my reputation. However, I make sure that I am not a boxer like any other boxer who returns to the ring, but does not show his abilities as before," he said.

The boxer from the Philippines has had this game after six years since he won his last professional win in 2019 against Keith Thurman.

After retiring, Pacquiao had time to return to the ring, but only for a game titled less impressive exhibition. Finally, he fought Rukiya Anpo in July 2024, which showed his ability had disappeared.

This is what makes many people wonder why Pacquiao wants to get into the fight for the approved WBC world title against Barrios.

Usually a fighter who returns from retirement will have a warm-up game first, but Pacquiao misses all that and immediately challenge for the title.

From a coach's point of view, it is very difficult to train someone whose peak skills have fallen considerably. Even though he was once one of the best, he is considered not to survive in a duel throughout 12 rounds.

"I'm really excited for this fight because I want to prove to the fans that Manny Pacquiao is still there. It's good to be back," Pacquiao said.

Barrios from the United States, 30 years old, has recorded 29 wins, one draw, and two defeats in 32 professional fights.

On the other hand, Pacquiao is one of the greatest boxers of all time ever, a global icon, and legend. During his heyday, he was recorded as having won eight divisions.

So, it is worth waiting for the extent to which Pacquiao is able to stay in the ring when he is already eroded by age.
