US Import Tariff Negotiations, Deputy Minister Of Trade Says Will Be Decided In August

Deputy Minister of Trade (Wamendag) Dyah Roro Esti said the decision regarding the negotiation of import rates between Indonesia and the United States (US) will most likely be known in August 2025.

"Please wait within the next month, we will see how (the results of the decision) or whether there will be changes," said Deputy Minister of Trade Roro quoting Antara.

Previously, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto ensured that the implementation of the 32 percent reciprocal tariff policy announced by US President Donald Trump for products from Indonesia was postponed.

US President Donald Trump previously announced that he would continue to impose a 32 percent import rate on Indonesian products starting August 1, 2025.

However, the Deputy Minister of Trade ensured that Indonesia would still try to maintain close communication and further negotiations regarding this matter.

"Indeed, regarding the tariff, yesterday the Coordinating Minister for the Economy went to the United States to follow up on the letter sent by President Trump, and again, we prioritize negotiations and communications," said Roro.

"But what is clear is that we will try to establish a good relationship with the United States," he said.

In the postponement period which is later expected to be the finalization of the alignment between the two countries, Roro also reminded the importance of Indonesia to open access to foreign trade.

One of the opportunities that can be utilized is the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) which was completed after 10 years of negotiations between the two parties.

The IEU-CEPA partnership is expected to bring great economic opportunities to both parties, especially with Indonesia, which plays a role in becoming a commodity supply country for the green economy transition.

What is no less important is how we expand the overseas market. So today is also a very good moment because Mr. President Prabowo Subianto in Brussels (Belgium) meets and conveys about Indonesia-EU-CEPA which is our new market for us to optimize in the future. This is also good news, we will always boost our foreign market in the future," said Deputy Minister of Trade Roro.
