Explosion Kills 5 Children Playing Football In Yemen

JAKARTA - At least five children died while playing football after an explosive device exploded near them in a residential area in southwest Yemen.

Citing AP, Sunday, July 13, two local residents who were eyewitnesses, Ahmed Al-Sharee and Khaled Al-Areki, said the children were playing football when the explosion occurred.

The explosion in Al-Hashmah District, Taiz Province, also caused three minor injuries with the dead to be taken to hospital.

According to a health service source at Al-Rafai Hospital, the dead were injured by shrapnel.

A spokesman for the United Nations child agency or UNICEF said they were not aware of reports of the incident so they could not verify the current facts.

Yemen's Human Rights group condemned the incident in a report that included terrible photos of the bodies of injured children.
