Target Digital Economy Domination In ASEAN, Komdigi Focuss On Building AI In Batam
The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) is targeting the progress of the national Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem in Batam. This focus is sought to strengthen competitiveness in the country.
Deputy Minister of Communication and Trade, Nezar Patria, stated that his party is trying to carry out strategic development in industrial areas. In this case, AI is very necessary so that Komdigi focuses on developing the national AI ecosystem, one of which is in Batam.
"Batam is one of the industrial areas that is at the forefront, a flagship for our nation in producing a number of devices, services, and income in the telecommunications industry," said Nezar Patria, quoted on Saturday, July 12.
Nezar also revealed the reason the government continues to encourage the progress of the AI ecosystem. The ASEAN digital economy potential is estimated to reach 120 billion US dollars (Rp1.94 quadrillion) in 2027. Indonesia is also predicted to be the largest contributor.
"Indonesia with a large population has the potential to become a major player in the artificial intelligence industry. This ASEAN area has the potential to become a global AI force," said Nezar.
The percentage of Indonesia's donations is estimated to reach 40 percent. This is a big number if the government manages to maximize the potential of the national digital economy. Unfortunately, there are several challenges that need to be faced to achieve this.

Indonesia must further prepare its digital infrastructure, such as data centers. In addition, the quality of its human resources still needs to be developed through talent training so that research support can also be maximized.
"Our connectivity already covers 97 percent of the region, but service quality still needs to be improved. Malaysia, for example, has reached 80 percent for 5G, while we are still below 5 percent," explained Nezar.
To catch up with this, Komdigi will prepare an AI Talent Factory initiative that involves many parties, from the government, universities to research institutions. This initiative can strengthen the capacity of human resources.
