Young People Are Now Vulnerable To Cancer, What Are The Types?
JAKARTA - Young people are currently increasingly susceptible to cancer. Doctors say that those aged 20 to 20 are now getting more and more cancer.
"I see more and more patients in their 20s and 30s diagnosed with cancer," said oncologist at the Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center in New Orleans, Dr. Jonathan Mizrahi, quoted by The Economist, on Friday, July 11, 2025.
The researchers in a study by the American Center Society reviewed data on national cancer incidents of more than 23 million cancer diagnosed patients. There are 34 different types of cancer that patients have, between 2000 and 2019.
To compare rates of cancer between generations, researchers calculated rates of cancer by age in the interval of five years, from 1920 to 1990.
Through this study, researchers found that the incidence rate of cancer increased in the millennial generation and gen Z. There are 9 types of cancer whose cases increased in the two generations.
Starting from breast cancer, endometrium cancer, colorectal cancer, non-cardia stomach cancer, bile biological cancer, ovarian cancer, teste cancer, to anus cancer in men.
Among these types of cancers, millennials are 12 percent higher for ovarian cancer, up to 169 percent higher for endometrium cancer.
The death rate also increased in the young birth group along with the incidence of liver cancer (only for women), endometrial cancer, bile biological cancer, testes, and colorectal.
"The increase in cancer rates among the younger generation shows a generation shift in the risk of cancer and is often an early indicator of cancer burdens in the future in this country," said Dr. Ahmedin Jemal.
Through this study, scientists have also revealed that the risk factors at a young age are now increasingly occurring. Some of the risk factors are nutrition, changing diet, inactive lifestyle, the use of drugs, to excessive consumption of processed foods.
