Indonesian Foreign Minister Calls For ASEAN-US Partnership To Become A Role Model
JAKARTA - The Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the ASEAN-United States partnership has a strategic meaning in maintaining stability and encouraging value-based inclusive growth.
Speaking at the ASEAN'US Post Ministerial Conference (PMC) attended by US Foreign Minister Marco Rubio in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Thursday, Foreign Minister Sugiono underlined that Uncle Sam's country is a growth and peace partner for ASEAN.
The Indonesian Foreign Minister highlighted the concrete achievements of cooperation that have had a direct impact on society, including through the establishment of the ASEAN US Center in Washington DC in 2023 which has strengthened ASEAN's visibility in the US.
To continue this momentum, Indonesia also appreciates the strong bipartisan support from the US Parliament for the ASEAN Act, which further strengthens US long-term commitments to the region.
On the other hand, educational cooperation remains an important pillar in relations between communities. Currently, more than 8,000 Indonesian students are studying in the United States.
"These students are not only scienceists, but also strategic bridges to our partnership. We hope that a more inclusive visa policy can support this long-term investment," said Foreign Minister Sugiono, launching a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Friday, July 11.
Foreign Minister Sugiono also expressed ASEAN's hope that the US will continue to support open and fair trade, including through the ASEAN US Trade and Investment Framework Arrangement (TIFA).
Meanwhile, as a peace partner, the Indonesian Foreign Minister emphasized that respect for international law must be a common basis in dealing with global geopolitical dynamics that continue to heat up.
