UMY Increases Financial Literacy For Housewives Through Community Service Programs
Bantul, 22 May 2025 In an effort to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals/SDGs), Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University (UMY) through its community service program, held a financial education activity entitled Improvement of Financial Planning Literacy for Housewives. This activity was organized by Dimas Bagus Wiranatakusuma, Lecturer of the Economic Study Program (IPIEF) of the UMY Faculty of Economics and Business, and took place in the Kasihan District area, Bantul.
The activities carried out on May 22, 2025 are a form of UMY's contribution to SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). By involving housewives as the main participants, this activity aims to improve the ability of family financial management, which is an important pillar of household economic resilience.
In his presentation, Dimas conveyed the results of a survey conducted on the group of housewives participating in the training. This survey evaluates two main aspects of financial literacy: Knowledge and Application of Financial Planning, as well as Improvement and Development of Financial Knowledge.
In the first aspect, namely Financial Planning Knowledge and Application, the results are still quite low. Only:
The average achievement of this aspect is 16.85%, which shows a low category and indicates a gap between knowledge and real practice in everyday life.
However, the results in the second aspect, Financial Planning Knowledge Upgrading and Development, show great potential:
This aspect records an average of 77.77%, which is classified as high, signaling the high spirit of housewives to continue learning and improve their abilities.
Dimas said that the role of housewives in managing finances is very strategic. "They are household treasurers who determine family economic stability. Increasing their financial literacy means strengthening the economic foundation of the community from below," he said.
This activity also provides participants with simple technical training, such as making household budgets, determining spending priorities, and designing long-term savings. Several financial recording applications were also introduced as practical tools.
The participants welcomed the enthusiasm of this training. Many admit that this is the first time they understand the importance of managing finances in a planned manner. Some mothers even hope that similar activities can be used as sustainable programs at the community or village level.
Through this activity, UMY reiterated its commitment to bring direct benefits of knowledge to the community, especially in supporting vulnerable groups such as housewives to be more economically resilient and empowered in family life.
