Android Immediately Use AI To Set Notifications On Mobile

JAKARTA - Google is developing a new artificial intelligence (AI)-based feature called the notification organizer' for the Android operating system. This feature is designed to automatically group notifications based on categories such as promotion, news, social, and suggestions, to help users deal with notifications more efficiently.

This feature is expected to debut in the first quarter update of Android 16 (QPR1). When activated, identified notifications will be muted and grouped into four main categories:

Promotions: Offers, discounts, or launches of new features

News: Main News, editorial

Social: Likes, Comments, uploads

Suggested: Newslette and media recommendations

This feature is similar to the way Gmail sorts emails into different folders, but this time it is directly applied to notifications on the phone. Using AI, the system will learn the patterns and contents of the notifications to determine the right categories. Google also confirmed that because it is AI-based, this system may contain an error.

Users will later be given the option to exclude certain applications, so that important notifications from these applications continue to appear as usual and are not grouped. This is an important step so that users do not miss crucial information due to AI classification errors.

Although the framework of this feature is already embedded in the open-source version of Android 16, its core function is analysis and clustering of notifications depending on the Notification Assistant contained in the Android System Intelligence application. Since this application is not included in the open-source Android version, it is likely that this feature will be exclusive to Pixel devices at the start of launch.

It is suspected that this feature will first be present in the upcoming Pixel 10 series, before being extended to previous Pixel models via regular update (Pixel Drop). However, it remains unclear whether this system will rely on on-device AI models like Gemini Nano, which are not available on all Pixel devices.

Currently, the notification organizer' feature is not officially active in Android's latest release. However, the Android Authority team managed to manually bring up the setting page in the Pixel 8 Pro which runs Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2. This page shows user control including the ability to choose which apps do not want to be regulated by AI.

With this feature, Google wants to bring a more organized notification experience and minimal interference, without sacrificing important information. Although still in the testing stage and can experience changes, this innovation shows Android's new direction in integrating AI into its everyday use experience
