Why Did Indonesia Join BRICS? This Is The Palace's Explanation
JAKARTA - Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said that Indonesia's entry into the BRICS world economic group was a direct initiation from President Prabowo Subianto to show the importance of Indonesia's position internationally.
Secretary Teddy, who accompanied President Prabowo to attend the first day of the 2025 BRICS Summit (KTT) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday 6 July, said that Indonesia was welcomed at the meeting.
"Indonesia's entry into BRICS membership was a direct initiation from President Prabowo in his first year as President of the Republic of Indonesia, and was welcomed by all members of BRICS," said Seskab Teddy in a statement Monday, July 7.
Seskab explained that the summit with the theme "Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance" was the first BRICS Summit attended by President Prabowo and the first time Indonesia became a full member in 2025.
After being officially declared a full member in January 2025, Indonesia was quickly accepted as the 10th member of BRICS.
"This shows how important Indonesia's position is in the international world," said Teddy.
With the initial members of five countries, now members of BRICS have grown to ten official countries, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopians, Iran, and Indonesia.
Seskab explained that these ten members represent 50 percent of the world's population, and 35 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) or global GDP.
President Prabowo believes that Indonesia's participation in BRICS will strengthen Indonesia's position in the global arena, and emphasize the importance of cooperation between countries to support world stability and prosperity.

Seskab also assessed that Indonesia's joining in the BRICS membership was an implementation of the diplomatic policy that President Prabowo had always emphasized.
"The joining of Indonesia in the membership of BRICS is a manifestation of the principles that are always held by the Head of State that there are too few friends, one opponent too many," said Teddy.
