Rejecting Microsoft, Discord Is Actually Friends With PlayStation

JAKARTA - Sony will integrate the Discord voice chat service into the PlayStation Network (PSN) ecosystem. This collaboration is somewhat surprising, because some time ago Discord had rejected an acquisition invitation by Microsoft.

Through its official blog page, Sony says this partnership will bring Discord as an alternative chat for anyone in the Sony ecosystem. Thus gamers can play games that support cross-play features, whether on the PS, PC or Smartphone platforms.

"Together, our team is working hard to connect Discord with your social and gaming experiences on the PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer to consoles and mobile devices from early next year," said PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan, as quoted from TechCrunch, Wednesday, May 5.

"Enables friends, groups and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily when playing games together," he added.

Ryan explained that the partnership was marked by making a minority investment as part of a $ 100 million Discord Series H round. Meanwhile, the unsuccessful acquisition talks with Microsoft were valued at US $ 10 billion.

Apparently, Discord would rather fly free with an IPO and try to become the ubiquitous dominant voice chat app, rather than being bought for a high price.

For information, the Discord voice chat update on the PlayStation will be made in 2022. It will likely coincide with a massive platform update to the PS5's long-term roadmap.
