Ready To Implement Constitutional Court Decision, KPU Chair Proposes Simultaneous Selection Of Organizers

JAKARTA - Chairman of the Indonesian KPU Mochammad Afifuddin said his institution is ready to implement the Constitutional Court Decision Number 135/PUU-XXII/2024 which separates national elections and local elections. However, he also requested that the selection of election organizers be carried out simultaneously, so that they can carry out their duties properly.

Afif said the Constitutional Court's decision should be a point for improving the electoral system. All parties must think about making the future elections better, so that not various problems that occurred in the previous election will not happen again.

"The MK has decided on one election option, namely the separation between national elections and local elections. So, that decision must be carried out. This decision must be a point of improvement in future elections," Afif said in a statement quoted on Saturday, July 5.

Afif admitted that there were indeed those who stated that the Constitutional Court's decision separating national elections and local elections would have a tremendous impact. However, he said, the KPU responded to the Constitutional Court's decision as usual because it had experience in running very complex elections.

"We think it's normal. We have carried out the heaviest elections in 2019 and 2024. So the impact of the Constitutional Court's decision is normal. The important thing is that this is a point of improvement," said Afif.

Even so, continued the former member of the Indonesian Bawaslu, to make improvements to the election, his party proposed that simultaneous selection of election organizers be carried out.

So far, according to him, the selection of election organizers has not been carried out simultaneously. In fact, in less than a day of elections, there is still a change in election organizers.

"We also propose a simultaneous selection for the implementation of elections, so that changes do not occur during the election. Previously, the day before the election was held, there were still changes to the organizers," he concluded.
