KAI Transports 33.3 Million Tons Of Goods In Semester I-2025, Dominated By Coal
JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded a positive performance in goods transportation services from January to June 2025.
The total volume transported reached 33,315,792 tons, up 1.4 percent compared to the same period the previous year of 32,857,086 tons.
KAI Vice President Public Relations Anne Purba explained, this performance reflects increasing customer confidence in train modes as an efficient and reliable logistics solution.
According to Anne, this growth also strengthens KAI's readiness to support the national Zero Over Dimension Over Loading (ODOL) policy which will be fully enforced starting in 2026.
"We continue to strengthen the role of a reliable public logistics provider, especially for energy distribution, food and retail needs in a safe and sustainable manner," said Anne.
Of the total volume of transportation in the first semester of 2025, he said, coal is still the dominant commodity with a volume of 27,624,772 tons, or 82.92 percent of the total.
"This figure shows an increase of 5 percent compared to last year's achievement of 26,211,970 tons," he said.
Anne explained that the majority of the coal transported by KAI was channeled to power plants in Java and Bali.
This contribution is very important in maintaining the stability of the national electricity supply that supports household needs, schools, hospitals, and small business actors in various regions.
"The energy distribution is not only about logistics, but also about the sustainability of life. The coal we are transporting today means electricity for MSME production machines and lighting for millions of houses," said Anne.
Anne said positive growth was also seen in retail transportation and fertilizer services.
Retail commodities such as Packaged Distribution Goods (BHP) and parcels recorded an increase in volume from 101,617 tons to 118,077 tons, or an increase of 16 percent.
Meanwhile, fertilizer transport rose from 10,890 tons to 13,230 tons, or an increase of 21 percent compared to the first semester of 2024.
In particular, this growth is driven by the need for fertilizer distribution to various agricultural centers, along with increasing demand due to the planting season and national food security programs.
In the long-term plan, KAI targets a 15 percent growth in the volume of goods transportation by 2029.
Coal transportation is targeted to reach 111.2 million tons, while non-coal commodities amount to 10.9 million tons.
This growth will be supported by the development of major logistics nodes in the southern part of Sumatra.
One of them is the construction of Tarahan II Terminal which is projected to be able to absorb up to 18 million tons of coal.
In addition, the expansion of facilities in Kertapati is predicted to contribute an additional volume of 7 million tons.

Overall, the South Sumatra region is estimated to be the main contributor to the additional volume of 27.8 million tons, making this area a strategic pillar in the future logistics map of KAI.
"This projection shows our commitment to continue investing and growing with the national logistics industry. Trains are not just means of transportation, but a driving force for progress," concluded Anne.
