Concerned About The Sinking Ship Incident In The Bali Strait, Puan Asks The Government To Improve Transportation Governance

JAKARTA - The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, expressed deep concern over the incident of the motorboat crossing (KMP) that sank in the Bali Strait.

Puan asked the government to improve transportation governance that prioritizes passenger safety.

"We, the leadership of the DPR and members of the DPR, of course, express our condolences for the tragedy or tragedy that occurred over the victims of the Tunu Ship in the Bali Strait, which is currently still in the search process," said Puan, Thursday, July 3.

The ferry, owned by a private operator named KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, sank while sailing on the Ketapang-Gilimanuk route, the Bali Strait, Wednesday, July 2, evening.

KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya carried 65 people, consisting of 53 passengers and 12 crew members, as well as 22 vehicles.

The Ministry of Transportation said that as of 10:00 local time, a total of 31 passengers had been evacuated safely. Meanwhile, four people were reported to have died.

"And we hope that all transportation-related stakeholders can continue to improve existing transportation governance so that the safety of all the crew and passengers. Do not let a disaster like this happen again," continued Puan.

Puan said the government also needed to mitigate disasters over recent extreme weather changes in Indonesia.

"Indeed, the situation or the weather is a lot of things, but mitigation and anticipation like this must be done," said Puan.
