Kidney Transplants Don't Have To Wait For Blood Laundering, This Is A Doctor's Explanation
JAKARTA - Not all people with kidney failure have to undergo a kidney transplant immediately. The therapy given to patients is very dependent on medical conditions, disease stages, and patient readiness as well as the medical team.
Some patients may still be able to live quality lives with conservative treatment or long-term analysis such as dialysis and kidney transplantation is the last solution.
However, according to Dr. dr. Maruhum Bonar Hasiholan Marbun, Sp.PD-KGH, a specialist in kidney and hypertension subspecialist, kidney transplants can be done without having to wait for the patient to undergo dialysis first. He emphasized that being analyzed and transplanted is two different approaches in handling chronic kidney failure.
"Sometimes there is a false assumption that a new transplant can be done after patients have been dialysis for years. In fact, once a person is diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure, he can already be considered for transplantation," said Dr. Maruhum in a discussion on kidney transplantation in Jakarta, as quoted by ANTARA.

As Chair of the Indonesian Transplantation Society (Inats), Dr. Maruhum emphasized that ideal candidates for kidney transplant are patients who have just started being analyzed, at least in the past year. In fact, in some cases, transplant procedures can be performed pre-emptively, namely before patients undergo analysis altogether.
He added that the longer a person depends on dialysis, the higher the risk of medical complications and metabolic disorders, which can complicate the transplant process.
"We often face cases where patients arrive late for transplant preparations," he said.
As the Head of the Kidney Transplant Team at the Bunda Hospital, he also suggested that anyone who experienced a decrease in kidney function immediately check themselves. Early detection is very important to determine whether or not it has entered the kidney failure phase and prepare for proper treatment, including the possibility of transplantation.
Furthermore, Dr. Maruhum said kidney transplants can help reduce the burden of long-term treatment, while increasing the life expectancy and quality of life for patients and their families.
