As Long As It's Not Sold! Pigs Become Investments In The Future Of Residents In 7 Jayawijaya Villages, Papua Mountains

WAMENA - The Jayawijaya Regency Government, Papua Mountains, through Pisugi District distributed 10 induction pigs to residents in seven villages as part of a local livestock-based economic development program.

This distribution is part of efforts to encourage the economic independence of the community through commodities that have high cultural and economic value among the citizens of Wamena.

"We are doing this to help the economic growth of Pisugi District residents to continue to increase," said Pisugi District Head Agus Kossay when met in Wamena, Antara, Sunday, June 29.

The assistance came from the 2025 Special Autonomy Fund (Otsus) budget of Rp. 100 million, and was symbolically distributed to the Yawu Wanuok Livestock Group, before being distributed to residents in seven villages, namely: Aikima, Akiaput, Pabuma, Pikhe, Pisugi, Suroba, and Wara.

Agus emphasized that the livestock given is a large parent pig that has the potential for high breeding if treated optimally.

"We Wamena people know very well the meaning of pigs in culture and the local economy. This assistance is not just livestock, but living assets that can be a source of long-term income," he said.

Agus also emphasized that the main goal of this assistance is for sustainable economic development, not for fast sale for a moment of profit.

"We hope that this assistance will not be sold immediately, but managed and developed so that the results can support the economy and improve the human resources of residents," he said.

This assistance is expected to be in line with the economic improvement program being promoted by the Regent of Jayawijaya Atenius Murib and Deputy Regent Ronny Elopere, especially in empowering local potential in villages.

"We want this program to trigger enthusiasm for the residents of Pisugi District to start independent in the household economy," said Agus Kossay.
