BMKG: 807 Tectonic Earthquakes Occurred During April 2021

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 807 tectonic earthquakes during April 2021 in Indonesian territory.

"This number has decreased compared to March which was recorded at 916 times," said BMKG Coordinator for Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation, Daryono, in Jakarta, as reported by Antara, Wednesday, May 5.

He explained that the earthquakes that occurred during April 2021 were dominated by earthquakes with a small magnitude below 5.0 as many as 785 times, a decrease compared to March which recorded 896 small earthquakes.

Meanwhile, significant earthquakes with a magnitude above 5.0 were recorded to increase by 22 times while in March only 20 times.

Earthquakes with shocks felt by the community during April occurred 69 times, this number increased from the previous month by 59 times.

Meanwhile, two destructive earthquakes were recorded during April 2021, namely the South East Java Earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1, hypocenter depth of 80 km on April 10, 2021. 14.00.15 western Indonesia time. This earthquake killed 10 people, injured more than 100 people, and damaged more than 2,400 houses.

As well as the Sukabumi South Earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0, a depth of 58 km on April 27, 2021, at 16.23.39 western Indonesia time. This earthquake caused damage to six houses but did not cause any casualties or injuries.

During April 2021 the active earthquake zones were Aceh-Nias, Lampung-Sunda Strait, South West Java, South East Java, Lombok, Sumbawa, and Sumba, then Maluku Sea, and Ambon-Seram.
