Focus On Developing EBT, Medco Wants To Drill Geothermal Wells In West Sumatra

BONDOWOSO - PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk (MEDC) reported that it will drill two wells for the geothermal power plant (PLTP) project in West Sumatra (West Sumatra).

President Director of Medco Hilmi Panigoro said Medco plans to drill the Bonjol District, West Sumatra. According to him, along the Bukit Barisan Mountains have great potential. The drilling will be carried out at the end of July 2025.

"At the end of July, we will drill in Bonjol, West Sumatra, then explore," he said when met after the inauguration of the Ijen 1 PLTP, quoted on Friday, June 27,

He emphasized that the amount of geothermal potential in Bonjol would only be known after drilling and exploration activities were completed. However, he believes that Bonjol has great potential because it is close to the volcanic area of the Bukit Barisan Mountains.

If exploration activities run smoothly, the Bonjol PLTP will be Medco's third project after previously successfully developing the Sarulla PLTP in North Sumatra and the Belawan Ijen PLTP in East Java.

The first is Sarulla, the second (Blawan PLTP Inspector General Unit I) has been completed, and this is only the first stage we will continue, and our third at the end of July will be drilling at Bonjol, West Sumatra, then exploration," he added.

Furthermore, he said, after successfully drilling two wells, the drilling of the third well will continue.

"I immediately drilled, if it's good (the results), add more," said Hilmi.
