Tragedy Of 29 Middle African School Students Killed Crowded Due To Panic Explosion Sounds

JAKARTA - A total of 29 students died when an electric explosion triggered panic and scrambled out in high schools in the capital city of the Central African Republic.

The tragedy occurred when more than 5,000 students from six other schools were taking the final exam at the exam center located at the Barthelemy Boganda high school in Bangui.

As reported by Reuters on Thursday, June 26, a source at the hospital said 29 people were killed and 260 injured.

"We were really overwhelmed. It was terrible. Dozens of victims came," the source said.

Another medical source said the death toll reached 31. According to sources, the sound of the explosion made students think the building would collapse.

"There was panic and several students jumped from the first floor," he told Reuters that the test participants were around 18-22 years old.

The Ministry of Education said the transformer, located in the school's main building, exploded after a team from the country's main power company, ENERCA, restored electricity.

The statement also said the incident resulted in "a number of serious injuries, unfortunately including some deaths".

The ministry said it would investigate how the incident occurred.
