The Attorney General's Office Affirms Pure Wiretapping For Law Enforcement
The Attorney General's Office (AGO) said the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) of the Deputy Attorney General for Intelligence (Jamintel) with four telecommunications companies for information wiretapping efforts was purely for law enforcement.
"This is purely because in the context of law enforcement, there needs to be a function that can support it so it needs to be collaborated," said Head of the Legal Information Center (Kapuspenkum) of the Attorney General's Office, Harli Siregar, as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, June 26.
Harli gave an example that one of the law enforcement carried out in the intelligence sector of the Prosecutor's Office is the search for parties who are included in the wanted list (DPO). In this context, legal certainty is needed immediately.
Explained in Article 31 paragraph (3) of Law Number 11 of 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions (ITE), interceptions or wiretapping that are excluded are carried out in the context of law enforcement at the request of the police, prosecutors, and/or other law enforcement institutions.
Therefore, wiretapping can also be done to speed up the law enforcement process.
"In the context of using the function of technology, it is necessary to cooperate with related institutions," said Harli.
The AGO ensures that the implementation of this MoU will be carried out carefully.
"We want to convey to the public that in this context, of course, it does not limit public privacy spaces because it is not allowed," he asserted.

Jamintel Attorney General's Office cooperates with telecommunications companies related to the exchange and use of information data in the context of law enforcement, including the installation and operation of information wiretapping devices.
This collaboration was marked by the signing of the MoU between Jamintel Reda Manthovani and four telecommunication service providers, namely PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk., PT Telekomunikasi Selular, PT Indosat Tbk., and PT Xl Smart Telecom Sejahtera Tbk.
Jamintel Reda said that this collaboration was a crucial step for the Indonesian Attorney General's Office, especially in the intelligence sector.
"Currently, the business core of the prosecutor's office is centered on collecting data and/or information which is then used as material for analysis, processing and use according to organizational needs," he said.
Reda assessed that collaboration with telecommunications service providers is crucial and urgent so that the quality and validity of data and information are indisputable and have A1 value qualifications.
Data and information with the A1 qualification, he said, have various benefits, including in a practical manner such as searching for fugitives or wanted lists, collecting data in order to support law enforcement, or in a global level that will be used as preparation of holistic analysis of certain and special topics.
