Cooperation With Opsel To Make AGO Can Tap User's Cellphone, This Is What Observers Say

The Attorney General's Office (AGO) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with four telecommunication operators, namely PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk, PT Telekomunikasi Selular, PT Indosat Tbk, and PT Xlsmart Telecom Sejahtera Tbk., related to law enforcement support.

Deputy Attorney General for Intelligence Reda Manthovani said that this collaboration focuses on exchanging and utilizing data or information in the context of law enforcement, including installing and operating wiretapping devices.

It seems that this need for accommodation raises public concerns about the privacy and security of their data. However, telecommunications observer at the Bandung Institute of Technology, Ian Yosep, emphasized that the public does not need to worry about this.

Because according to him, this cooperation has actually been established for a long time, and the installation of this wiretapping device is carried out in certain cases, for investigation needs, and in accordance with applicable procedures.

Ian also stated that this collaboration would not prevent the community from sharing its political views, because according to him, the political issues and legal issues handled by the AGO are much different.

"This signing is just a cooperation update. There is no need to worry, because cases are different (with political issues). Unless the person spreads hoax news, or violates the ITE Law," Ian said when contacted by VOI on Thursday, June 26.

However, Ian hopes that no particular party will use this cooperation for abuse of power. Because according to him, this legal requirement is also carried out by other countries.

"So the AGO cannot just bid, because it violates user privacy, especially now that there is a PDP Law," he said.
