Pope Leo Calls On Politicians To Respond To Challenges To Artificial Intelligence
Pope Leo warned politicians on Saturday, June 21 about the challenges posed by the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI). The leader of the highest Catholics in the world stressed that his impact on the younger generation is a major concern.
Speaking at an event attended by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and parliamentary delegation from 68 countries, Pope Leo again raised the AI issue which he has highlighted several times since the beginning of his early papal life in May 2025. The event is part of the celebration of the Yubileum Year or the Holy Year of the Roman Catholic Church.
"What is more, don't forget that artificial intelligence is just a tool for human good, not to reduce its value let alone replace it," Pope Leo said in his speech.
AI supporters stated that this technology can accelerate scientific and technological advances and help humans complete routine tasks, thus giving more time for high-value and creative jobs.
In his statement, Prime Minister Meloni said that he really appreciates the Pope's teachings which also condemn the widening gap between the rich and the poor in society.
"Italy will continue to strive, both at the national and international levels, to ensure that AI development remains under human control and makes human welfare its ultimate goal," Meloni said.
