Champions In Club World Cups Don't Remove Man City's Failure
JAKARTA - The 2025 Club World Cup champion did not erase the disappointment of Manchester City which failed to win any trophies in the 2024/2025 season.
Man City failed to extend the Premier League title for the fifth time in a row.
This season, the championship trophy belongs to Liverpool which equaled the Manchester United winning record. Both teams won the Premier League at the most, which was 20 times.
Meanwhile, Man City only finished third in the final standings. They even almost missed competing in the Champions League this season when they were knocked out of the top five.
In the 2024/2025 season, the Premier League gets five slots in the Champions League plus Tottenham Hotspur who are champions of the Europa League.
Man City not only failed in domestic competitions but also in the Champions League. They have been eliminated in the playoffs towards the last 16. Real Madrid thwarted The Cityzens' ambition to go further in European competitions.
"I always say that the season was really bad," said manager Pep Guardiola, calling Man City's failure.
"Even if we win this competition [The Club World Cup] will not change that thought that we did fail this season. But we are still trying to survive for a long time in this event," he said.
Guardiola himself has won the Club World Cup four times. Including bringing Man City to win the trophy in 2023.
Only at that time, the Club World Cup was still bringing together champions on their respective continents. Now the tournament has changed which is followed by 32 teams and is held every four years.
Man City himself is in Group G with Juventus, Morocco club Wydad Casablanca and Saudi Arabia's Pro-League club Al-Ain. In the first match, Man City won 2-0 over Al-Ain.
