The Indonesian Foreign Minister Wants Political And Diplomatic Efforts To End The War In Gaza To Be Intensified

JAKARTA - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono wants political and diplomatic efforts to intensify the war in the Gaza Strip, as Israel violence in the Palestinian enclave.

This was conveyed by Foreign Minister Sugiono at the 51st Ministerial Conference (KTM) of Islamic Cooperation Organizations (OKI) in Istanbul, Turkey, Saturday, June 21.

"We must not give up on diplomacy. However, we must also look at our role in strengthening multilateralism and international law. OIC must be firmer and tougher," said Foreign Minister Sugiono quoting his statement at the KTM, Sunday, June 22.

Considering the current situation in the Middle East, especially in the Gaza Strip, Indonesia, said Foreign Minister Sugiono, proposed that political and diplomatic efforts to end the war in Gaza be intensified.

"We must accelerate international recognition of Palestine as a sovereign country," said Foreign Minister Sugiono.

The latest conflict in Gaza broke out on October 7, 2023, when a Palestinian militant group led by Hamas attacked Israel's southern region, leaving 1,200 people dead and another 251 held hostage, according to Israeli calculations, as reported by Reuters.

Israel responded to this by blocking, airstrikes and military operations in the Gaza Strip region.

On January 19, Israel and Palestinian militants agreed to a temporary ceasefire as well as a exchange of hostages and detainees on both sides.

Israel then continued its intensified military operations against the Gaza Strip from March 18, following the end of a temporary ceasefire.

As of yesterday, the death toll from an Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip has reached 55,908, while injuries have reached 131,138, quoted from WAFA.

"The continuing cruelty in Palestine reflects the failure of a multilateral system in ensuring justice. As countries in the southern hemisphere, the OIC must constantly advocate a fairer and more inclusive world order," said Foreign Minister Sugiono.
