Hugo Lloris: Tottenham Must Continue To Advance After Europa League Champion

JAKARTA - Hugo Lloris believes his former club Tottenham Hotspur has lifted the burden on their shoulders after winning the Europa League.

He also praised Ange Postecoglou for ending Spurs' 17-year wait to win trophies.

Lloris, who previously captained Tottenham, expressed his joy at a 1-0 win over Manchester United at Bilbao last month.

However, in the end it was not enough to convince Spurs officials to keep Postecoglou after their worst Premier League season was confirmed by finishing in 17th position.

"I'm very happy. I'm very happy for the club, for the people at the club, for the players."

"We struggled years after this trophy. They finally got it and I think they deserved it."

"Hopefully this will make their burden a little lighter for the future. I think it's also time to build Spurs success."

"Even though I am no longer a Spurs player, I am still following the news, the team, and the results," Lloris said of Tottenham's victory in the Europa League final.

Postecoglou was replaced last week by Thomas Frank as head coach. Lloris also admitted that he was not surprised by the decision.

"No, nothing surprised me in football. However, at the same time, it was difficult to say something because I was on the other side."

"I don't know what's going on inside the club so it's very difficult for me to judge."

"If they make this decision, it's because they believe there are other better options for the club's future."

"What Ange Postecoglou did was extraordinary. He brought this Europa League trophy, he brought a lot of joy to the Spurs community, as well as a lot of pride."

"We all have to be grateful for that. I'm not here to talk about the choice (tottenham's new head coach)."

"He is a very respected coach. He did an amazing job with Brentford."

"Now, like every coach, when you arrive at a new club, there is a new environment that you should accept."

"If the club decides to appoint it, it might be because they decide it's the best for the future," Lloris said.

The French goalkeeper did not want to talk much about the presence of Thomas Frank. He chose to reflect on Spurs' struggles with Postecoglou, which many problems hit.

"They had a very difficult season. They also suffered a lot of injuries affecting the team and performances."

"I think in the second half of the season, it seems they decided to give everything for the Europa League."

"They did and you have to congratulate them because this is another way to get into the Champions League."

"In the end, I don't know if you finished 10th, 14th, 15th, 16th. Did you get the chance to win trophies, but on the other hand it was an extraordinary achievement."

"I've been part of a very competitive team for years and the target is to reach the top four, but at what price?"

"We couldn't find a way to win trophies, league trophies, or even Europa League trophies, but we managed to reach the top four over the years. I don't know, it all depends on the club's views," Lloris said again.

Apart from that, the 38-year-old goalkeeper left Spurs in February 2024 after appearing 447 times in 11 years.

He started for Los Angeles FC (LAFC) in the 2025 Club World Cup match against Chelsea on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, when his team lost 0-2.
