MacOS 26 Presents Phone Application: Answer And Make IPhone Calls Directly From Mac

So far, Mac users have been able to receive iPhone calls via the Continuity feature, but do not have a special interface like on iPhone. With the Phone application present on macOS 26, users now get full access to contact lists, call logs, voicemail, and spam blocking features all directly from the Mac screen.

The Phone app on macOS works by connecting Macs and iPhones via the Wi-Fi network, leveraging Apple's Continuity technology. As long as the iPhone is connected, users can receive or make calls using Mac speakers and microphones or audio devices such as AirPods.

Its interface resembles the Phone app on iOS 26, with a favorite contact display at the top, a list of recent calls, and options such as unanswered calls, voicemail, unknown callers, to spam. Interestingly, users can access voicemail transcripts directly from Mac, even block or tag numbers as spam instantly.

One of the flagship features that starts testing is the ability to record calls. When this feature is enabled, the Notes app automatically opens a new note containing call details, voice recordings, and conversation transcripts. Apple also made an automatic announcement that the call is being recorded similar to the feature on the iPhone.

In addition, users also get access to Live Translation, Hold Assist, and Screen Sharing during the call. All of these features can be accessed through a small panel in the upper right corner of the Mac screen when the call enters or takes place.

Although the Phone app promises high integration and productivity, this early beta version still shows a lot of problems. Testing shows the app often doesn't respond to mouse clicks, the call recording process sometimes fails, and the contact image display can be faulty or blurry.

In one case, the call was cut off just minutes after it started, without user interaction on any device. Apple has not officially explained the cause of the disturbance, but beta users have sent a bug report to the company.

The Phone app on macOS 26 clearly brings a new experience that makes it easier for users to answer calls while working. Voicemail support, transcript, spam blocking, and call recording make it a complete communication tool directly from the desktop.

However, with macOS 26's official launch planned for this fall, Apple still has a big homework to do to perfect this feature so that it is stable and reliable for all Mac users around the world.
