Essity Collaborates With Ministry Of Health In Control Of Antimicrobial Resistance In Indonesia

JAKARTA - Global companies in the field of cleanliness and health, Essity, officially established a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) of the Republic of Indonesia in controlling antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This collaboration is an important milestone in sustainable health services within the framework of Sweden-Indonesia Sustainability Partnership (SISP).

This partnership is in line with the inter-governmental agreement (G2G) between Sweden and Indonesia, which prioritizes a sustainable health system, digitization and resilience of public health services.

The signing of a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) took place at the SISP Healthcare Conference 2025 on 27 May 2025.

Director of Business Essity for Central and East Asia, Danny Cho, said that Essity's experience in controlling AMR is supported by scientific and innovative approaches. Through Sorbact technology - wound care solutions without antimicrobial content that bind and eliminate bacteria through unique hydrophobic interactions - Essity has succeeded in reducing infection rates and the use of antibiotics in various health facilities in Europe and Asia.

"We not only contribute to improving the outcome of patient care, but also support strengthening national efforts in tackling antibiotic resistance. Together, we encourage changes to a better and more sustainable health care system," Danny said in his statement, Friday, June 6.

Through this MoU, Essity and the Ministry of Health will work together to strengthen efforts to control AMR nationally, including through public awareness campaigns and health workers, distribution of educational materials in line with AMR's national strategy, as well as training and capacity building of health workers.

This collaboration also includes support in the preparation and implementation of national guidelines related to controlling infection and the use of responsible antimicrobials, as well as encouraging the exchange of science and application of proof-based wound management solutions at health care facilities.

"In accordance with our mission of Breaking Barriers to Wellbeing, we want to help overcome the challenges of realizing health and well-being in Indonesia," Danny said.

In addition to national initiatives, Essity is also active as a global advocate for AMR prevention. In 2023, Essity was appointed as a member of the United Nations Foundation Expert Group for Antimicrobial Resistance Management, joining various world leading organizations in formulating AMR's global policies and encouraging cross-sectoral collaboration.

This partnership is part of a joint effort between Sweden and Indonesia to accelerate innovation of health services and achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Healthy and Prosperous Life. As part of the SISP, Essity joined other Swedish companies to support Indonesia's health transformation through investments responsible for, knowledge transfer, and technology collaboration.

Through this MoU, Essity not only strengthens its operational presence in Indonesia, but also shows how public-private partnerships can create real impacts on global health. Implementation activities will be carried out in stages over the next five years, with periodic evaluation and joint supervision by both parties.

When Essity and the Indonesian Ministry of Health started this partnership, the message conveyed was clear: AMR mitigation requires collaboration, innovation, and continuous commitment. Sweden and Indonesia show that strategic partnerships can present solutions that scale, sustain and save lives.
