Autonomous Car Production, Volkswagen Develops Own Chipset
JAKARTA - Volkswagen (VW) doesn't seem satisfied with the off-the-shelf computing power of its self-driving cars. Reportedly, the company plans to design its own chip for its high-performance autonomous vehicle.
"To achieve optimal performance given the high demands that exist for cars, software and hardware must get out of one hand," said Volkswagen Chief Executive Herbert Diess as quoted by Autoblog, Monday, May 3.
As with other technology companies, Tesla and Apple, the chip will provide VW with greater competence in determining its processor and target market.
Others, of course, this step will probably be the key to VW's goal to become a more agile brand and advances in technology. Unfortunately, there is no information for the details of the VW chipset.
Still, VW wouldn't have made the chip itself without a more professional helping hand. The company only wants patents. Therefore, VW's software division, Cariad will develop to develop relevant expertise.
Tesla relied on standard NVIDIA hardware for previous cars, but has switched to a dedicated chip that gives him more control over how Full Self-Driving and Autopilot will develop.
Likewise, many have praised Apple's increasing performance advantages for its internal processor designs. Apple could build a CPU that fits its ideal product strategy instead of shaping phones and computers around someone else's chip roadmap.
However, it seems that to try out the capabilities of VW's newest chip, we have to wait a while first. Because it is unclear when the VW self-driving car will launch until 2025, while the world is currently experiencing a chipset supply crisis.
