House Of Representatives Commission VII: Threatening Karang Reefs, Nickel Mining In Raja Ampat Must Be Reviewed
JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission VII DPR Chusnunia Chalim asked the government to pay serious attention to nickel mining activities around marine conservation areas and national super priority destinations, especially Raja Ampat.
According to him, the existence of a mine in an area known as the richness of coral reefs and the beauty of underwater nature must be reviewed immediately.
"Regarding nickel mining permits around super priority destination areas, where their destinations highlight natural beauty and especially coral reefs, this is something that must be reviewed," Chusnunia said, Thursday, June 5.
He also highlighted the potential ecological threat posed by mining logistics lines, especially crossing activities from mining sites to processing facilities (smelters) that often cross or close to sensitive water areas.
Chusnunia emphasized that the impact of nickel mining can be directly felt by marine ecosystems, including the damage to coral reefs which are the main attractions of tourism and the world's marine biodiversity center.
"The nickel mine, especially the path crossing from the mine site to the smelter, is something that must be reviewed considering this can pose a threat to coral reefs," he stressed.
