Ask UNHCR To Help Indonesian Citizens Abroad, Minister Of Human Rights: Whether Migrant Workers Or Refugees

JAKARTA - Human Rights Minister (HAM) Natalius Pigai asked the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to help Indonesian citizens abroad.

The statement was made by the Minister of Human Rights in a press conference after receiving a visit from the UNHCR Representative for Indonesia Francis Teoh and his entourage at the Ministry of Human Rights Office, Jakarta, Wednesday, June 4.

"We will also ask UNHCR to help our citizens in other countries abroad, whether as migrant workers or also refugees or those who are stateless (unionized people) abroad," said Pigai.

Pigai said that many Indonesian people grow and grow up in other countries, but do not have identity cards (KTP).

He also said that Indonesia is one of the countries that send the most migrant workers in the world.

"Therefore, when we pay attention to refugees in the country, we also care as a human, as humans, for international refugees. I do not use their status in the context of citizens, but as humans," he said.

The Indonesian government, added Pigai, is committed to managing the rights of refugees in the country. Not only local refugees, but also internationally.

According to him, this needs to be done reciprocally.

"When we help them care as a human (as humans), we also ask as a human they (UNHCR) to care about Indonesian blood, Indonesian blood descent, who are facing problems outside," he said.

On that occasion, the Minister of Human Rights also said that every refugee, including a foreign national, who is in the territory of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, is part of the responsibility of the state.

He said that the state must respect and care in advancing the lives of everyone in Indonesia. The state must also participate in meeting the needs of domestic and international refugees, including asylum seekers.

Pigai explained that refugees could be caused by many things, such as eviction victims, victims of natural disasters, victims of social conflicts, to victims of regional openings.

"All of this is part of the attention of the Ministry of Human Rights, while UNHCR handles cross-border refugees, including stateless," said the Minister of Human Rights.
