Pro-Russian And Anti-Israeli Hackers Become Germany's Largest Cyber Threat, Capai Losses Of IDR 3,174 Trillion

JAKARTA Cybercrime in Germany soared to the highest level in history in 2024. This was driven by attacks from pro-Russian and anti-Israeli hacker groups. This was stated in the 2024 Cyber Crime National Situation Report released by BKA ( Federal Criminal Office) Germany on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

"Cyber crime is increasingly becoming a real threat to our national security," said German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, at a press conference in Berlin. "The attack is getting more aggressive, but our response strategy is also getting more professional," he added.

In its report, BKA recorded 131,391 cases of cyber crime occurring within the German area, plus 201,877 other cases originating from abroad or unknown locations.

BKA said that the main perpetrators of this attack were groups supporting Russia and anti-Israeli groups. Their main targets are public and federal institutions, including government agencies and critical digital infrastructure.

One of the most detrimental forms of attack was ransomware, in which data was stolen and encrypted by the perpetrators for ransom. There were 950 companies and institutions that were victims of ransomware throughout 2024.

Germany's digital association, Bitkom, reported that the total economic loss due to cyber attacks last year reached 178.6 billion euros (around Rp3,174 trillion), an increase of 30.4 billion euros compared to the previous year.

In response to this increasing threat, Dobrindt emphasized that the government will soon expand legal authority for authorities to deal with cybercrime and raise digital security standards for companies in Germany.

"The protection of our digital space must be improved so that we are not left behind by the perpetrators of international cyber crimes," said Dobrindt.
