4.6 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Lubuk Basung - Agam

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) informed that an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 rocked the Lubuk Basung - Agam area, West Sumatra, on Sunday, June 1, at 23.13 WIB.

Based on information from the official BMKG website monitored by ANTARA in Jakarta, the epicenter of the earthquake was at sea, about 21 kilometers southwest of Lubuk Basung - Agam.

The earthquake coordinates were recorded at 0.47 South Latitude and 99.91 East Longitude, with a depth of 83 kilometers.

Earthquake vibrations were felt in Padang with a scale II-III Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI), and in Padang Panjang with an MMI I-II scale.

The Mercalli scale is used to measure the intensity of the earthquake based on its impact, especially in locations that do not have a seismometer. On the MMI scale, vibrations are generally not felt except in extraordinary conditions by some people.

The MMI II scale shows vibrations felt by several people and light objects that are hung swaying. On the MMI III scale, the vibration felt clear inside the house, such as when a large truck passed.

BMKG appealed to people in affected areas to remain alert to the possibility of aftershocks.
