Hamas Urges US To Give Serious Guarantee Of Ending War In Gaza

JAKARTA - Hamas spokesman Jihad Taha said Islamic resistance groups asked US mediator Steve Witkoff to provide serious written guarantees regarding the halt to Israel's war in the Gaza Strip.

Taha said Hamas was in coordination with other resistance groups, closely reviewing proposals submitted by the US Special Envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, according to the Palestinian Information Center as reported by IRNA on Saturday, May 31, reported by ANTARA.

Taha said that the plan proposed by Witkoff did not have the necessary guarantee and failed to accommodate many requests from Hamas.

Nevertheless, he stressed that Hamas still maintains a positive stance on any initiative or proposal that could lead to the end of the war and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.

He also stressed that each deal must include a full ceasefire as well as the complete withdrawal of the Israeli military from the Gaza Strip. However, the final version of Witkoff's plan did not include direct or gradual guarantees for the cessation of war.

Taha called on international organizations to declare an emergency status to save Gaza from a humanitarian catastrophe.

According to Wafa news agency, Israel's war in Gaza has left 54,321 people dead and 123,770 injured, since October 7, 2023.
