Polish Police Arrest 28 Supporters Involved In Clashes In UEFA Conference League Final

Police said they arrested 28 people after supporters Chelsea and Real Betis clashed several times before the start of the UEFA Conference League final on Thursday, May 29, 2025, early morning WIB, in WroClaw, Poland.

Footage on social media shows supporters in downtown throwing chairs and glass bottles at each other and getting into a fight.

The clash between the supporters had occurred since the day before the match. The police also deployed water cannons and stun grenades to disperse the crowd.

Even after the game, for most of the day, police officers guarded the blockade around Chelsea supporters celebrating in the city's main square.

"There has been an increase in negative behavior from the two teams who came to WroClaw for the match," said local police spokesman Lukasz Dutkowiak, as reported by ESPN.

Authorities confirmed that water cannons had been deployed to disperse the groups. In addition, those involved in the violation of the law have been identified.

Polish police previously said they were trying to identify the supporters involved in one incident and had detained a Spanish national after a fight on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, evening local time, or Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

Three other Spanishs were detained in the early hours of the morning after they lowered the UEFA flag.

"There is no tolerance for violence in our streets!"

"I thank the police for their firm action against rioters in the uniform of Chelsea and Betis in WroClaw. We warn you: if necessary, the police will be more cruel today!" wrote Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, on X.

Polish police said everyone could feel safe thanks to the presence of large numbers of police in certain areas.

However, hours before the match, under heavy rains, most supporters dismissed the violence.

"There are always bad people among 50,000 people. We enjoy every second, we will celebrate it afterwards, and we hope Chelsea fans will cry," said Betis supporters Juan, in the square of the old town of WroClaw, before the match.

"We are not afraid, we are very happy. Most of us just want to enjoy football and matches," said Maria, another Betis fans.

Chelsea, six-time Champions League winner and six-time Premier League champions, arrived in the UEFA Conference League final after securing fourth place in the English League on Sunday, May 25, 2025, which will give them a chance to play in the Champions League next season.

Meanwhile, Real Betis fans are happy to reach the European final for the first time in the club's history.

Unfortunately, they failed to beat local rivals, Sevilla, in terms of success in the continental because they lost to Chelsea 1-4.
