Closing The Session Period, Puan Highlights The Spike In Layoffs To The Impact Of Trump's Tariffs
JAKARTA - The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, highlighted the surge in layoffs (PHK) in the speech of the Plenary Meeting closing the Session Period III of the 2024-2025 Session Year which was held today.
Puan asked the government to respond quickly to various problems faced by the people, including the impact of the national economy due to the policy of the US President's import rate, Donald Trump.
"The Indonesian House of Representatives through the Council's Apparatus for Supervision has carried out its supervisory functions through various meetings related to problems faced by the people, including incidents of ammunition destruction expired in Garut, accelerating the appointment of PPPK in 2025, a spike in cases of layoffs (PHK), including in the media and television industry, and the implementation of US reciprocal rates on national economic performance," said Puan in a speech closing the session at the DPR building, Tuesday, May 27.
The House of Representatives held a plenary meeting with the agenda of conveying the views of the factions on the Macro Economic Framework and the Principles of Fiscal Policy for the RAPBN for Fiscal Year 2026, submitting reports on the results of examinations on the 2024 Central Government Financial Report (LKPP), approval of requests for consideration of the granting of Indonesian citizenship, and the closing of the Trial Period III of 2024-2025. Puan was also accompanied by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, Adies Kadir, Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal and Saan Mustopa.
In her speech, Puan said, currently Indonesia is faced with various global economic challenges that are in turmoil, such as trade tariff wars, geopolitical conflicts and other global dynamics, which have an impact on domestic conditions both economically, socially and culturally. Therefore, according to Puan, it takes the right state policy to intervene in the situation so that it can maintain the sustainability of the national economy.
"We need to ensure that national development continues and protects people's lives," he said.
In addition to alluding to Trump's layoffs and reciprocal rates, Puan said that during this trial, the DPR had supervised various policies to support national supply stability and food prices, fulfill housing needs for low-income people, improve oil and gas sector governance and downstream various mining commodities, and plan to procure the M72 TBC vaccine.
"Through the supervisory function, the Indonesian House of Representatives has also responded to the findings of the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency regarding cases of food poisoning in 10 provinces, plans to remove the moratorium on sending migrant workers to the Middle East, the impact of social media on child behavior, and law enforcement and rehabilitation of drug cases," explained Puan.
Puan said that during this trial the DPR had also given approval for the granting of citizenship to the Republic of Indonesia to four football athletes.
In addition, the DPR has also formed a 2025 Hajj Implementation Supervisory Team, a Supervisory Team for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, and a Supervisory Team for Disaster Management.
On the other hand, the DPR also hosted the 19th Conference of the State Parliament of the OKI (the 19th Session of the PUIC Conference) at the Parliament Building of the DPR RI on 12-15 May 2025. As the host, Puan has accepted her duties as President of PUIC until the 20th PUIC conference in Azerbaijan.
Facing increasingly complex global challenges, Puan emphasized, the government must be able to respond effectively to every problem faced by the people.
"So that people feel the presence of the state in their lives," said Puan.
Closing this trial period, Puan expressed her appreciation for the hard work of all members of the DPR RI who have worked to realize the people's expectations. Puan reminded that the people have high hopes for the constitutional work of the DPR RI.
"It's time for us to enter a recess to greet, listen to and absorb the aspirations of the people, explain the constitutional tasks that have been carried out by the DPR RI, and unite the people in the spirit of mutual cooperation to build Indonesia's progress," explained Puan.
"On behalf of the leadership of the DPR RI, I announce to all Indonesian people, from May 28 to June 23, 2025, the DPR RI is entering a Recess Period III of Session Year 2024-2025," he said.
