Bareskrim Polri Unloads Elephant Ivory Trading Action In Jakarta-Sukabumi

The Directorate of Certain Crimes (Dittipidter) of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the National Police revealed the illegal elephant ivory trade. Disclosures were carried out in the Jakarta and Sukabumi areas.

Dirtipidter Bareskrim Polri Brigadier General Nunung Syaifuddin said the disclosure of the case stems from the results of cyber patrols that found social media accounts trading elephant tusk illegally.

This information was followed up by arresting two suspects, namely (R) 47 and N (40).

"The two perpetrators are known to be not part of an international syndicate, but an individual who uses social media networks to sell protected animal body parts to domestic collectors and buyers," Nunung told reporters, Monday, May 26.

Dirikkan, penangkapan tersangka R (47) dilakukan di wilayah Sukabumi pada 8 Mei 2024. Dalam penangkapan ini, polisi mengamankan 4 tusk gajah dengan berat total 6.26 kilograms.

After that, the police arrested N (40) at a boarding house in Tebet, South Jakarta on May 14, 2024. From the arrests, 3 elephant tusks weighing a total of 6.73 kg and 1 cell phone were used for illegal transactions.

"The modus operandi of the perpetrators is to buy ivory from certain individuals and resell it at a higher price, using digital platforms," he said.

The National Police also appealed to the public not to be involved in buying or selling wildlife and its parts, and to invite the public to actively report all forms of illegal trade in protected animals to law enforcement officials.

"Trafficking of protected animal parts is a serious crime and must be eradicated because it damages the ecosystem and threatens species sustainability," said Nunung.

For their actions, the two suspects were charged with Article 21 paragraph (2) letter d jo. Article 40 paragraph (2) of Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and Their Ecosystems, with a maximum imprisonment of 5 years and a maximum fine of IDR 100 million.
