Google Increases Gmail Reply With Contextual AI From Gemini

JAKARTA Google has officially announced a major improvement in the smart reply feature in Gmail by presenting their latest artificial intelligence technology, Gemini. This feature is designed to provide a more detailed, personal, and relevant email response to the context of email content, user writing style, as well as data from Google Drive and user inbox.

So far, Gmail's smart reply feature offers a short answer like 'Thank you!' or 'OK, sound good!' which is suitable for replying to simple emails. However, this feature becomes less effective when users have to respond to longer emails or require deep answers.

Through Gemini's presence, replies not only become more contextual, but also sound natural and in accordance with user's personal communication style, both formal and straightforward, as well as more relaxed and warm.

In a demonstration exhibited at the Google I/O 2025 event, Google showed how Gemini was able to read the context of previous emails and related documents on Google Drive, then automatically compile more specific and appropriate response suggestions. Despite looking sophisticated, Google still reminds users to always review the contents of replies before sending, given that AI still has the potential to make mistakes.

Not only increasing smart reply, but Google also announced additional features in Gmail that also take advantage of Gemini's capabilities. One of them is the automatic cleaning of the inbox. Users simply give simple commands such as Delete all unreaded emails from last year, and Gemini will immediately follow up without the need for users to sort out emails one by one.

Google will also add a live meeting scheduling feature from Gmail. Gemini can recognize when users want to set a meeting appointment, and will automatically offer the option to share a live schedule order page from in an email. This is expected to reduce the time usually spent going back and forth between Gmail and the calendar.

According to Google's announcement, this entry box scheduling and cleaning feature will become widely available in the third quarter of this year. Meanwhile, smart reply updates with Gemini support will be launched in stages starting at the end of 2025.

This step marks Google's commitment to continuing to improve user experience in Gmail through increasingly intuitive and integrated AI technology.
