River Overflow Soaks 1,011 Houses In Tasikmalaya, An Elderly Dies

The heavy rain that flushed the Tasikmalaya Regency, West Java, since Tuesday night, May 20, 2025, has resulted in heavy flooding in Sukaresik District. Thousands of houses were submerged, and an elderly resident was reported to have died.

Sukaresik sub-district head, Asep Nurcahyo, said the flood was caused by the overflow of the Citanduy River and Cikidang River. The puddles reached an altitude of up to two meters and submerged at least 1,011 houses, 53 hectares of rice fields, and 36 hectares of gardens owned by residents.

This flood is an occurrence that repeatedly falls every time it rains heavily. A total of 4,122 people were affected, including those who had to leave their homes because their gardens and agricultural land were also submerged," said Asep, Wednesday, May 21.

One death toll was recorded in this disaster. A resident named Siti Aminah (75), a resident of Sukaratu Village, died after allegedly slipping while looking for fish in the middle of the flood and being swept away by the current.

"The victim slipped and was carried away by the current. When our team was monitoring, the victim was found dead," said Asep.

Some of the affected residents chose to flee to the emergency post, while others temporarily stayed at relatives' homes. Currently, the local government has only provided one evacuation post.

Some residents choose to live with their families. While the emergency post is still one, we continue to coordinate for further handling," he added.

Floods also caused damage to a number of public facilities, including mosques and schools. Although river dredging efforts have been carried out together with the River Basin Center (BBWS), the high water discharge from upstream has made rivers overflow again and flood settlements.
