PPATK Explains Why The Blocked Account Is Mass And The Solution

JAKARTA - The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) conveyed explanations regarding several blocked bank accounts.

According to PPATK data, throughout 2024 tens of thousands of accounts were identified as a result of the practice of buying and selling accounts used for depositing online gambling. In addition, accounts belonging to other people were also found massively used to accommodate funds resulting from criminal acts of fraud, narcotics trafficking, and various other crimes.

"In 2024 there are more than 28,000 accounts originating from the sale and purchase of accounts used to deposit online gambling," said PPATK Head Ivan Yustiavandana in a press release received by VOI, May 18.

Furthermore, Ivan emphasized that the use of a booster account controlled by another party is one of the modes that are prone to misuse in illegal activities. Dormant itself is a banking term that is used to describe bank accounts that have not been in transactions for a long time, such as withdrawals, deposits, or transfers for a certain period.

Therefore, PPATK, in accordance with its authority based on Law no. 8 of 2010, has temporarily suspended customer transactions with accounts declared boarding based on banking data.

"This step is an implementation of the National Movement for the Prevention and Eradication of the Crime of Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing carried out by PPATK and other stakeholders as well as part of PPATK's efforts to protect the public interest and maintain the integrity of Indonesia's financial system. The temporary suspension of Dormant account transactions aims to provide protection to account owners and prevent abuse by irresponsible parties," said Ivan.

Customers affected by the temporary suspension still have full rights to their funds and can apply for reactivation through the branches of each bank by fulfilling the established procedures. Another alternative, customers can also contact PPATK to get more information regarding their account status.

PPATK explains how to deal with blocked accounts. First, close accounts that have not been used/active for a long time. Second, never provide personal data to strangers. And third, immediately report to the bank or law enforcement officials if they get money transfers from unknown accounts.

In addition to ensuring the security and transparency of the financial system, this temporary suspension also aims as a notification to customers regarding the status of their account mortgages, as well as information to the heirs or company leaders (for corporate customers) if the whereabouts of the account are not known.
