Historic Night At Wembley: Palace Beat City And Win FA Cup
JAKARTA Crystal Palace won the FA Cup after beating Manchester City with a narrow score of 1-0 in the final which was held at Wembley Stadium, Saturday, May 17 evening WIB.
This victory is the first major trophy in Crystal Palace's history. Apart from lifting the FA Cup, Palace is also certain to qualify for the Europa League and will face Liverpool in the Community Shield next season.
This result is also a bitter record for Manchester City, because for the first time in Pep Guardiola's coaching career, he closed the season without a single title.
City have been dominant since the final whistle sounded. The first chance came from Erling Haaland in the sixth minute after receiving Kevin De Bruyne's cross at the far post. However, Haaland's flick could still be denied by Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson.
In the 12th minute, Henderson returned to being the savior after breaking Josko Gvardiol's header.
Despite continued pressure, Palace was able to steal a goal in the 16th minute with a quick counter-attack. Daniel Munoz stabbed from the right and sent a pull ball which Eberechi Eze greeted right in front of goal to change the score to 1-0.
Ismaila Sarr almost doubled Palace's lead, but his close-range shot was parried by City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.
City got a golden opportunity in the 33rd minute through the penalty spot after Tyreck Mitchell fouled Bernardo Silva in the box. However, Omar Marmoush's penalty was parried by Henderson who performed brilliantly.
Ahead of the end of the first half, Jeremy Doku tried his luck through a cut-inside shot from the left, but was again pushed over by Henderson. The 1-0 score lasted until the break.
Entering the second half, City immediately pressed. Doku had a chance early in the second half, but the ball that was loose in the penalty box was cleared by Palace defenders.
In the 61st minute, Palace scored a goal through Daniel Munoz who took advantage of the rebound after his first shot was parried by Ortega. However, the goal was ruled out by VAR because the previous ball hit Sarr who was in an offside position.
Palace then played defensively by piling up players on the back, making it difficult for City to create a clean opportunity.
City's best chance in the second half came in the 82nd minute through young Claudio Echeverri. However, his shot was too weak and was pushed over again by Henderson.
Despite the additional time given for 10 minutes, City still failed to equalize. Echeverri got the last chance again in the 96th minute, but Henderson was again a barrier with a crucial save.
