Mount Marapi Eruption Twice With A Capai Eruption Of 1,000 Meters

JAKARTA - Mount Marapi in West Sumatra experienced two eruptions in the near future with an eruption height of 1,000 meters and 700 meters from the peak of the volcano.

Residents around the mountain, admitted that they heard a loud bang in the incident.

"The boom sounded loud, our house swayed. We immediately left the house and saw clearly an eruption with thick smoke at the top of Mount Marapi," said a resident of Ampek Angkek District, Agam Widia (35) as reported by ANTARA, Saturday, May 17.

The puffs of eruptive smoke were clearly visible from the city of Padang Panjang, Agam Regency, east and Bukittinggi City.

Volcano Observer Officers (PGA) in Bukittinggi Ahmad Rifandi said the eruption occurred at 09.47 WIB and 09.54 WIB with thick ash intensity leaning towards the northeast and north.

The first eruption at 09.47 WIB with a column height of ash was observed 1,000 meters above the top of the mountain (3,891 meters above sea level). The second eruption was at 09,54 WIB with a height of 700 meters.

"The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity leaning towards the north and northeastern," he said.

The first eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.4 mm and a temporary duration of about 51 seconds. PGA revealed the eruption was still ongoing when the report was made.

The second eruption was recorded on a seismogram with an amplitude of 7.4 mm with a duration of 1 minute 15 seconds.

Currently, the volcanic activity of Mount Marapi is at level II (alert) status with the recommendations of the surrounding community not to enter and not to carry out activities within a radius of 3 km from the activity center (Verbeek Luxury).

"People who live around valleys, banks or rivers that head up at the top of Marapi to remain aware of the potential or threat of lava hazards or lava floods that can occur, especially during the rainy season," said Ahmad Rifandi.

According to PGA records, this eruption has been the 442nd since the main eruption in December 2023 and 11th in May 2025 and 6,499 gusts to date.
