Chairman Of The Indonesian House Of Representatives, Puan Maharani, Urges Commission To Summon The TNI Commander After The Ammunition Explosion Kills 13 People In Garut
Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, asked Commission I of the House of Representatives to summon the TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto for an explanation regarding the explosion of ammunition in Garut, West Java, which killed 13 people, including 9 civilians. He emphasized the importance of a thorough evaluation so that the same incident does not happen again.
"Don't let something like that happen again. It must be evaluated why it happened, and in the future, don't involve civilians," said Puan at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Thursday (15/5/2025).
The tragic incident occurred on Monday morning, May 12, 2025, at Cibalong Beach, Sagara Village, Cibalong District. The explosion occurred during the destruction of expired ammunition carried out by the Indonesian Army.
According to preliminary information from the TNI, a number of civilians who died were suspected of being scavengers who collected metal remains from the site of the explosion, such as grenade debris and mortars. However, the victim's family denied it. They said the victims had long been involved in the destruction of ammunition at the request of the TNI, not just scavengers.
Puan assessed that if it is true that civilians are involved in military activities without security procedures, then this must be accounted for openly.
"Commission I must summon the Commander and Commander in Chief or the ranks involved in the incident," said Puan.

He also emphasized the importance of accountability for the incident that killed dozens of lives. "There must be someone responsible for this incident," he continued.
Of the total victims, four of them were members of the Indonesian Army, consisting of two officers and two non-commissioned officers. While the other nine are civilians. Currently, the exact cause of the explosion is still in the internal investigation process of the Indonesian Army.
