SYL Starts Sentenced To 12 Years In Prison In Sukamiskin

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has executed former Minister of Agriculture, Syahrul Yasin Limpo (SYL), to the Sukamiskin Class I Correctional Institution, Bandung City, West Java. SYL is a convict in a corruption case within the Ministry of Agriculture in the period 2020 to 2023.

"On March 25, the KPK executed the body criminal against SYL convicts in Sukamiskin," said the KPK spokesman, Budi Prasetyo, in his statement.

SYL was sentenced to 12 years in prison and a fine of Rp. 500 million. He was also required to pay compensation of Rp. 44 billion and US$ 30 thousand. According to Budi, the KPK still continues to accept payments of part of the fine and replacement money.

"Until now, the KPK is also still receiving several payments, some of which are fines or replacement money in the case," he said.

However, a number of evidences in the SYL case have not been confiscated. This is because these items are still needed in the process of investigating the money laundering crime case (TPPU) which also involves SYL.

"There are several other items that cannot be confiscated because they are still needed in handling the money laundering case," added Budi.

In this corruption case, SYL was found guilty of extortion and received gratuities worth a total of IDR 44.5 billion. This crime was committed with two of his subordinates, namely the Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture for the period 2021'2023, Kasdi Subagyono, and the Director of Agricultural Equipment and Machinery, Muhammad Hatta. Both act as coordinators of collecting funds from echelon I officials and their staff to finance personal needs and SYL's family.

SYL had filed a legal action, including an appeal to the Supreme Court (MA). However, the Supreme Court panel of judges rejected the request and upheld the appeal decision, namely the 12-year prison sentence. The verdict was read by the chairman of the panel of judges, Yohanes Priyana, along with two members, Arizon Mega Jaya and Noor Edi Yono.

In addition to corporal punishment, SYL is required to pay compensation of Rp. 44.2 billion and US$ 30 thousand, minus the amount of money that has been confiscated. If you are unable to pay, the sentence will be replaced with five years in prison.

Previously, the Jakarta High Court increased SYL's sentence to 12 years in prison and a fine of Rp. 500 million, subsidiary to four months in prison. Substitute money was also increased to Rp. 44.2 billion and US$ 30 thousand, subsidiary to five years in prison.

This verdict is heavier than the decision of the Jakarta Corruption Court at the first level which sentenced him to 10 years in prison, a fine of Rp. 300 million, a subsidiary of four months in prison, and compensation of Rp. 14.14 billion and 30 thousand US dollars with a subsidiary of two years in prison.
