JAKARTA - Minister of Basic and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen) Abdul Mu'ti explored cooperation with the Governor of Jeju Province, South Korea when the two met in a series of meetings between the seven Ministers of Education, members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

The Minister of Education and Culture, in a bilateral meeting that took place in Jeju, saw the potential for cooperation related to renewable energy management and waste management within the framework of environmentally friendly schools.

Regarding environmentally friendly schools, Minister Mu'ti had conveyed opportunities for cooperation that included the use of solar power and other renewable energy to help educational units in areas that had not been reached by electricity. He considered the cooperation to be very useful.

"Many regions in Indonesia have not been reached by electricity. Utilization of renewable energy to provide electricity in these areas will be very helpful," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, May 13.

The Minister of Education and Culture, who was accompanied by the Head of the Standard, Curriculum and Education Assessment (BSKAP), Toni Toharudin and the Indonesian Education and Culture Attache for Korea, Amaliah Fitiah, also conveyed the importance of encouraging waste management in Indonesia.

This, he considered, could be one of the greater opportunities for cooperation between the Jeju provincial government and the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture in an effort to increase awareness of waste management. Similar cooperation has been carried out with schools in Bontang, East Kalimantan.

"The waste management model that has been carried out by Jeju Province can be replicated in selected areas in Indonesia," he said.

Responding to the proposal, the Governor of Jeju Province, Oh Young-hun expressed his interest, especially in the field of renewable energy and energy transition. He also admitted that he was very happy to realize this synergy as soon as possible

"We are very interested in seeing our renewable energy model implemented in other countries," said Governor Oh.

Minister Mu'ti also responded with the possibility that she would include the two collaborations in the environmentally friendly school program.
