Mount Marapi Recorded Seven-time Eruption From May 1'12, Highest Abu Colomb Capai 1 Km

PADANG - Mount Marapi located in Agam Regency and Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra Province (West Sumatra) experienced seven eruptions during the period 1 to 12 May 2025 with the highest ash column reaching 1 kilometer (km). This data is as recorded by the Volcano Post (PGA).

"The latest PGA noted that the eruption of Mount Marapi occurred on Monday (12/5) in the morning at 03.10 WIB with a height of ash column being observed about 600 meters above the top of the mountain," said PGA Teguh officer in Padang, quoted from ANTARA, Monday, May 12.

In the last eruption, the ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity leaning towards the southeast. This eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.3 millimeters with a duration of about 30 seconds.

Teguh said that of the seven eruptions throughout May 2025, PGA recorded the highest ash column height of up to 1,000 meters which occurred on May 4 at 22:09 WIB.

The eruption is known to be 45 seconds long with an amplitude of 30.3 millimeters. Meanwhile, six other eruptions of volcanic ash varied from 500, 600 and 800 meters above the top of the mountain.

Referring to the evaluation of Mount Marapi for the period 16 to 30 April 2025, the Geological Agency reported several volcanic activity, including the measured SO2 gas emission rate (flux) from the Sentinel satellite which was low.

Based on the evaluation of monitoring data, the activity of Mount Marapi is fluctuating and has not shown a consistent long-term trend pattern.

The potential for eruptions or eruptions to still exist that can occur at any time as a form of release from the accumulation of pressure (energy) produced by the dynamics of fluid supply/magma from depth.

Currently, Mount Marapi has Alert status or Level II. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) issued a number of recommendations, including prohibiting people, tourists, or visitors from doing activities within a three-kilometer radius from the activity center (Verbeek Luxury).

PVMBG also reminded the threat of cold lava potential, especially for people who live along rivers that originate from the top of the volcano.

This condition is especially during rain or rainy season. Then, if there is rain of public ash, people are advised to use a mask covering the nose and mouth to avoid respiratory tract problems.
